Print sharing is a feature of modern operating systems and computers which allows multiple users to access and use a single printer. Typically, print sharing requires a computer with an operating system that supports it (e.g., Windows, Mac OS, etc.). When a computer is configured to share a printer, the printer is assigned a network identity (e.g., a NetBIOS name) and each user on the network can send documents to the printer. This can be done directly from the computer’s hard drive or from any computer on the network. Once a user sends a document to the printer, it is queued up, and each document is printed in the order in which it was sent. Print sharing has the benefit of allowing access to a single printer from multiple computers, eliminating the need for multiple individual printers. It also allows for more efficient use of network resources, as a single printer can be used and shared by all users on the network instead of each user having their own printer.
